187 Chambers Barristers
Our prosecution barristers provide the highest level of advice and representation.
Members of 187 Chambers are particularly experienced in prosecutions which involve public interest immunity, sensitive issues relating to disclosure and multi-agency co-operation.
187 Chambers is a leading criminal set with a long-established history of handling prosecutions. We are highly committed to the work we undertake on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and have a strong and dedicated team of criminal barristers.
Our barristers have unrivalled experience in the prosecution of the highest profile cases brought before the courts in this country during the last two decades and beyond.
Chambers has a large team of criminal barristers committed to prosecution work, working on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service and other Government agencies. Members of the team undertake prosecution work in the full range of cases and often represent the Crown Prosecution Service and the Attorney General in the Supreme Court (House of Lords), as well as in the Administrative Court in related public law challenges.
187 specialist barristers are regularly instructed by the Crown Prosecution (CPS) teams both in London and further afield. The teams our barristers work with include the London and the Eastern Region’s Complex Casework Units dealing with Homicide, Rape and Serious Sexual Offences.
Our barristers provide advice, often at the early stages of a case to assist with case direction and strategy. Our specialist teams work with many agencies and organisations including the Serious Fraud Office, the Health & Safety Executive, the Environment Agency and local authorities, as well as to the Treasury Solicitor, the Intelligences Services, the National Crime Agency and the Police. We are renowned for building close working relationships with the teams in these agencies and being highly praised for our approachability as well as going the extra mile to ensure cases are well-presented and successful.
We are used to dealing with highly sensitive issues and vulnerable witnesses. Members of our Chambers hold the necessary security clearance levels to handle cases involving complex disclosure.
Private prosecutions can be brought by any individual or company and they proceed in the same way as a prosecution brought by the Crown. Private prosecution is often quicker and more focussed.
Private prosecution are suitable for individuals or companies who have been the victims of criminal acts committed against them by others where the prosecution authorities have failed or refused to act. Members of Chambers have a great deal of experience in mounting these cases and have close ties with solicitors’ firms that specialise in providing this bespoke form of prosecution, making the whole process easier and very effective.
The cost of pursuing prosecution privately will depend on the volume of evidence, the level if investigative work required and the complexity of the issues within the case.
Choosing a private prosecution will allow you closer involvement and control over each decision made.
Amongst our number are numerous senior former and current prosecutors, including those who have acted as First Senior, Senior and Junior Treasury Counsel (barristers appointed by the Attorney General to prosecute the most serious and complex criminal cases to come before the courts).
Our specialist criminal barristers are available to offer advice on:
- The prospects of success for your case
- Applying for and resisting the issue of a summons
- Applying to the Director of Public Prosecutions to take over and stop a prosecution.
- Costs recovery.
